Accreditation and Professional Develop
In order to help reach our aim of developing better coaches and coaching we are offering eLearning courses in the core components of coaching climbing, which when combined with the current NGB awards like the Climbing Wall Award, Single Pitch Award and Mountain Instructor Award would set you up for career in coaching rock climbing and enable you to join Climbing Coaches. These courses will hopefully be recognised by the existing professional and industry bodies as Continuing Professional Development. We also aim to offer an accreditation scheme for anyone who completes our courses to enable an alternative entry to our membership.
Why are Climbing Coaches courses different from the existing awards?
Well the current NGB qualification systems offer very good terrain specific awards. Whereby the holders are signed off to manage a group indoors, at a single pitch crag or any multi pitched cliff. Our accreditation systems offers further learning in coaching specific areas, where you can develop at your own pace.
We focus specifically on the four skills areas that we see essential for being a good coach. These are:
- People skills – Decision Making, Behavioural Traits, Group Behaviours, Managing Conflict.
- Teaching skills – Pedagogy, Effective Practice, Questions, Feedback, Goal Setting.
- Safety skills – Risk Management, Legal and Moral issues, Incident Avoidance, rescue skills.
- TTPP Skills – (Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological) – Climbing Movement, Training, Tactics, Performing under pressure.
Why is Climbing Coaches different from existing professional bodies?
We believe Climbing Coaches is unique as it offers a climbing specific identity. Whereas the Mountain Training Association (MTA) and the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) offer superb value in their fields of mountaineering. Their brand simply isn’t a good fit for climbing coaches, as they require the general public to make the jump from mountaineering to climbing coaching.
It is this focus on climbing coaches that stands us apart and whilst we are in the early days of developing as a membership organisation, we feel this will allow us to develop for our members.
The developer of Climbing Coaches is still and remains a member of AMI, his desire to see a different open approach to recognising competence and expertise in coaching lead him to design this site to allow qualified and experience climbing coaches to demonstrate their competency in their chosen fields.
Its aim as well as CPD for coaches and instructors is to serve as a brand for climbing coaches to help sell themselves and what they do to the general public. The current cost of membership that will allow access to our growing selection of online courses is £30 a year.
For that you have access to Climbing Coach Branded Clothing, A extended profile with links to your website/Facebook page/ UKC profile and Mountain Training profile. As we develop a membership base we will start investing the money in an UK wide advertising campaign, aimed at Climbing Walls and Clubs to promote all our member to their potential customers.
